Chris Traill chooses his words carefully. So for this Spotlight, we kept it short: a handful of questions, a handful of straight answers.
As Growth Director at Percayso Inform, Chris is one of the people insurers, MGAs and brokers talk to when they want to know what our insurance data intelligence can do for them. Here’s what he had to say.
The job
In one sentence, what does a Growth Director at Percayso Inform actually do?
I make sure the insurers we work with get real, measurable value from our data. That starts with knowing what they’re trying to fix, and it doesn’t stop at go-live.
What does a good day look like?
A client rings with a problem or an idea we haven’t seen before, and by the end of the day we’ve worked out how to answer it.
What do clients most often get wrong about data before they talk to us?
Most insurance providers use broadly the same datasets. Their first instinct is to ask how they can get more of it. The quickest wins usually come from asking a sharper question of the data they already have.
What’s the one question you wish more insurers would ask?
Where are we mispricing right now without realising it?
The industry
How long have you worked in insurance, and how did you end up here?
I’ve been in and around insurance for many years. I’m approaching seven years at Percayso, and before that I spent 11 years at a credit bureau focused on the insurance and financial services markets. My career has always been in data, analytics and technology.
What’s changed most in the market since you started?
Regulation is the obvious standout for me. The FCA’s ban on price walking changed everything. You can’t win on renewal margin any more, so you have to price new business right from the first quote and consider the customer’s needs over their whole journey with you to maximise lifetime value.
Beyond that, the pace of pricing has ramped up significantly. Rates used to be reviewed every quarter. Now they move daily, sometimes hourly, and the data and intelligence behind them has to keep up.
The quick-fire round
Tea or coffee? Coffee in the morning, tea after lunch, green tea in the evening.
If you weren’t in insurance? I’m an avid DIYer, so probably a trade of some sort. Joinery, most likely.
How do you switch off at the weekend? Time with the kids, mostly: football, rugby, cricket, gymnastics. When I get the chance, I’ll take the mountain bike into the hills or go for a muddy run.
One thing colleagues don’t know about you? I once broke my arm in two places attempting to impersonate Batman.
The Percayso Inform team in three words? Agile. Sharp. Fun.
The last word
Careful with his words, less careful with capes. If you’d like to talk to Chris about where your pricing could be sharper, get in touch.
